Dry eye is a chronic condition. A combination of age, environment, hormonal factors and inflammation cause Dry eye disease. Dry eye symptoms increase with age. Recent studies have found that the incidence of dry eye is roughly 8% in women and 3% amongst men. The incidence amongst women 50yrs+ is over 11% . The prevalence in over 75yr old is around 18%.
To keep your eyes healthy, you need to have tears to provide moisture and lubrication. This is not only for your comfort, but it helps with your vision. Tears are secreted by glands around your eyes. In some instances, the glands become blocked, or the balance of the various components of the tear layer is altered. This results in the discomfort which may present with scratchiness, itchiness, stinging, redness and a feeling as though there is something in your eye.
In order to make you more comfortable, we can recommend various treatments. This may include lubricants, heat packs, lid scrubs, and massage. There are many types of lubricants in the form of drops and ointments. Depending on your needs, one may work better for you than another.
We may also talk to you about other medications and your nutrition. Many supplements have been helpful for patients with dry eye.
We may also recommend punctal plugs. These are used to close the ducts that help with the overflow of tears. If you stop the tears from draining out of your eye, you will have more tears in your eyes. If necessary, we may refer you to a practitioner who offers more advanced treatments.
