Our personalised approach allows OptimEyes to deliver effective and targeted solutions that significantly improve the visual experiences of our clients.
Behavioural vision is based on a philosophy of providing care and treatment to ensure that the entire visual process is functioning well. In addition to eye health and eye sight, emphasis is placed on functional visual skills. These include visual abilities that relate to how we use our vision to guide and direct our movements during every day tasks, as well as how we interpret the environment around us. Skills such as smooth eye movements, efficient focussing control and how well the eyes team together to provide a clear, single and stable view of the world are all important. The tools used to provide this treatment include lenses, prism, filters, tints and Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation. Find out more about Behavioural Optometry.
Neuro Optometric Rehabilitation (Vision therapy) is prescribed by the Behavioural Optometrist based on the findings of your evaluation and history. The patient may work with the Optometrist or a Vision Therapist during their program. The therapy usually involves weekly practice, visits and daily home practice. To be successful, therapy must be done regularly and frequently. The activities are designed to be fun but have challenge. As the patient works through the activities, they will learn to better control their eyes and have an improved understanding of what they are seeing and reading. The purpose of therapy is to build skills in order for the patient to use their vision with efficiency and minimal effort and in so doing improve their confidence, performance in school, at home, on the sports field and at work. For patients who have sustained a concussion or brain injury, a guided programme can assist them in Returning to work or School, by improving their neuro visual integration and eliminating some of the symptoms such as poor eye movements and focussing, which accompany the brain injury and cause disruption to daily life.

Yes, all patients who have a Medicare card are eligible to claim a comprehensive eye examination rebate every three years for people under 65, and annually for those over 65. However, Medicare does not cover glasses or contact lenses—certain schemes are available depending on the state or territory in which you live. Private health Funds offer rebates for frames, lenses and contact lenses. If you live in NSW, then you may be eligible for free prescription glasses through the NSW Spectacles Program.

Yes, optometrists are trained to evaluate patients for glaucoma by measuring eye pressure and examining the optic nerve. They can initiate treatment when needed and refer patients to ophthalmologists for advanced cases. There is no cure for glaucoma, and vision loss is irreversible, however your optometrist, ophthalmologist, or a combination of the two, will work to manage the Glaucoma to ensure slowing of the progression of the disease and preventing further vision loss.
They may do this through:
Yes, during a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will perform a tonometry test – this test measures your intraocular pressure IOP and detects any changes in eye pressure, which may lead to optic nerve damage, and increase your risk of glaucoma.
The tonometry test can be performed in several different ways. Many optometrists use a non-invasive non contact tonometer which lightly touches the cornea. Another tonometer measures the IOP by placing a slit lamp in front of a patient, and moving the machine forward until the tip of the tonometer probe touches your cornea. A hand held version may also be used. By slightly flattening the cornea, the tonometry test can detect pressure in your eye. Because your eye is numb, you’ll feel no pain during this procedure.
People over 65 should have an eye examination every 12 months—this is because older people are at higher risk of common eye problems like glaucoma and cataracts, and also because people over 65 are more likely to need prescription glasses, which may need to be checked and adjusted. People between the ages of 18 and 65 should have their eyes tested every two years.
It depends on the state where you live, but eligible pensioners in NSW can access one pair of single vision glasses or one pair of bifocal glasses every two years, with lens upgrades available for an additional fee. This is possible through the NSW Spectacles Program. You are eligible if you:
· Have not claimed free glasses through the program within the past two years
When buying prescription glasses, you should consider the fit of the frame to your face shape, the quality of the lenses and their suitability for your prescription. You should also consider any required lens coatings like anti-reflective. Importantly, your glasses should be comfortable to wear for long periods.
